Dental Laminates | An Overview

In many cases of damaged teeth, a dentist glues custom-shaped pieces of plastic or porcelain, or cosmetic veneers, to the front of teeth for a natural, healthy look. Veneers often provide the solution for discolored, misshapen, crooked or chipped teeth, for example. A dentist customizes a patient’s porcelain laminates by working from an impression of a patient’s tooth or teeth for a custom and natural-looking result. Laminate teeth veneers do not stain; overall, they offer a solution that lasts.

Veneers often provide a more affordable alternative to conventional crowns. In addition to a convenient price at the outset, veneers are notable for their durability. Porcelain veneers do not stain and can last from 10 to 15 years. Cosmetic dentistry veneers can often provide a less aggressive placement process. Specifically, a dentist will need to remove much less of a tooth when placing a laminate veneer than when placing crowns. This is especially beneficial because the more of a tooth a dentist removes, the greater the risk of damage to the tooth.

The Veneer Attachment Process

The veneer placement process first involves light buffing of the patient’s teeth to accommodate temporary veneers. Next, a dentist will cast a mold of the patient’s teeth from which to model the veneers. Once specialists have formed a patient’s temporary veneers, the patient will be able to meet with his or her dentist to test their fit. The patient will be able to get a feel for the fit with temporary cement. During this stage, it is critical to get a look at your veneers in both the light of the dentist’s office and in natural light. A patient should let his or her dentist know if there should be any color, shape or size adjustments.

A patient’s dentist will place the permanent veneers with glycerin or water, glue the veneers and then cleanse the teeth with chemicals to secure a bond. A dentist will not be able to change veneers’ color after gluing. Following the application of the glue, the dentist will use a beam of light to harden the adhesive.
