What Are Dental Bridges?

A bridge is a dental appliance that replaces one or more of a patient’s teeth by connecting an artificial tooth to surrounding natural teeth or dental implants. Specifically, a fixed bridge stays permanently in place, while patients can remove other types of bridges. With proper maintenance, fixed dental bridge front teeth can last for many years.

Significantly, a fixed implant bridge can both prevent a patient’s teeth from moving out of place and maintain the shape of his or her face. Fixed bridge dental can also provide a natural looking smile, ease both speaking and chewing, and even out the forces of a patient’s bite by taking the places of missing teeth.

Fixed bridge teeth can consist of a variety of metals, and replicate the look of a natural tooth through custom-colored porcelain. However, some bridges are made completely of porcelain.

Customizing Fixed Bridges

Though each case is different, most conditions tend to follow general customization and placement processes. First, a dentist prepares the patient’s bridge supports. Next, the dentist places replacement crowns, pares down the teeth on either side of these crowns and makes an impression of the teeth. Next, the dentist will give the patient a temporary acrylic bridge to fill the gap while professionals customize the final bridge. The temporary bridge will minimize sensitivity, allow for normal eating and replicate the look of natural teeth.

Then, the dentist sends the dental impressions to a technician to customize the final crowns and join them to an artificial tooth. Finally, the dentist will cement the crowns to the affected area.

Overall, the dental bridge placement process is not painful. When paring down the teeth, a dentist will numb the surrounding area. Patients do not always experience pain following placement, but can take over-the-counter painkillers, if necessary. Some patients also experience sensitivity to hot and cold foods in the days following surgery. However, this tends to ease as the patient heals.
